The autumn foliage in Spearfish Canyon is at 77% of its peak colors during this first official weekend of fall in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The initial half of the Canyon (from Spearfish through Devil’s Bathtub parking area) continues to shine with lime green ash and boxelder trees, deep red sumac shrubs, and golden birch.
We are seeing new changes in the trees around Kissing Rocks and past Long Valley Picnic Area. Notably, the birch trees in this area are moving from bright yellow to a deeper golden. Long Valley is one of my favorite spots in the Canyon because of its variety of flora. I especially love the vistas driving northeast, or back into Spearfish from Savoy. The layers of deciduous trees along with evergreens against the rock strata is a sight to see!
Speaking of golden leaves, the Canyon’s oak trees are just starting to turn from green into their autumnal colors. I have not seen as many acorns on the oaks this year. It may be that we received a late spring frost that damaged the blossoms. However, this year I am seeing a plethora of chipmunks in the Canyon. Maybe that is where all the acorns went!
Leaf drop is still low, but on a hike this weekend you will notice fallen leaves accumulating on the paths. I sat quietly along Roughlock Falls Trail for this report and witnessed several leaves float slowly to the ground. Low lying shrubs like dogbane and baby trees almost seem to sprinkle the dark Canyon floors with their lighter leaves.
